How did it begin?
The founder of pointillism is an artist by the name of George Seuret who was a student studying at the Ecole Des Beaux-arts in Paris. This art movement began in the late 1880s and encompassed a unique style that had never been seen before. Pointillism describes a technique of Neo impressionism in which hundreds of tiny dots or dashes are applied to a canvas to create a luminosity. In this type of art the colors applied to the canvas are pure, meaning they haven't been mixed on a pallet, this allows the viewer to mix the colors optically. Pointillism was the most influential style of post-impressionist painting and was practiced by a large number of post-impressionist artists.
The most obvious characteristics to be noticed in a pointillism painting besides the dots and dashes is going to be the colors. In most paintings primary colors are used to generate the secondary colors when a viewer looks at it. This is able to happen because of the use of pure colors in the painting. The extreme details used in pointillism are also one of the most noticeable traits to be found. The following characteristics can also be found:
Georges Seuret is the artists who sparked the new revolutionary art movement known as Pointillism. He discovered the relation between science, color, and light, and through the scientific process discovered a way they could mesh perfectly strictly through optics. The application of science to things beyond just mathematics and chemistry is what really sparked this movement. Seurets work around it and his color theory is what made it possible.
"Some say they see poetry in my paintings; I see only science."
What came before Pointilism?
Post impressionism(1886-1905): Post impressionism is the broad art movement that came before Neo Impressionism, which is the art movement pointillism falls under. Post Impressionism developed as a reaction against impressionists concern for the naturalistic depiction of light and color. Artists like Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh rejected interest in depicting the observed world but instead used there memories and emotions to connect to the viewers on a deeper level.
What about after....
Art Nouveau(1890-1914):Art Nouveau was a movement that focused on the decorative arts and architecture. Artists drew inspiration mainly from geometric forms, elegant designs that created a flow through the piece, and natural forms with more angular contours. The movement was meant to abolish the traditional " hierarchy" of the arts such as painting and sculptures.
